Ramy w/ Nader Helmy & Basil Seif

“We didn’t know much, but we knew we had to perform that specific kind of patriotism.” —Nader Helmy

“The part that really got me was when Ramy’s dad went out and put the American flag up [after 9/11]. My mom was buying every American flag thing she could from 2001-2005.” —Basil Seif

Aditya chats with Nader Helmy and Basil Seif about their experiences with 9/11, performative activism, and the scarily accurate Egyptian representation in Ramy’s “Strawberries” (Season 1, Episode 4).

Nader Helmy is an artist, inventor, and technologist born in Egypt and raised in America. A child of immigrants and a creative misfit, he lives at the intersection of many different identities. He's dedicated to building a future of collective liberation, in the digital world and beyond.

Basil Seif is a data scientist and comedy/film fanboy. When he’s not working or discussing representation in media, he can be found watering his cucumber plants and reciting Willem Dafoe’s lines from The Lighthouse (2019).
